Completed in 2003 as West Virginia’s first soccer-specific facility, the Paul Cline Memorial Sports Complex hosts the WV State High School Soccer Tournament, club state championships, and the YMCA’s Appalachian Champions Cup, which draws more than 80 teams from six states. After two decades of service, the complex’s 432 metal halide sports fixtures and 88 security lights were failing, obsolete, and costly to maintain. The YMCA of Southern West Virginia engaged Helios Energy™ to deliver a turnkey LED solution that would cut energy use, eliminate maintenance, and improve safety and playability.
CHALLENGE
The project covered eight fields and 520 fixtures, including 22 hard-to-reach, 70-foot poles. The installation had to happen during a tight window while the complex stayed open, and the crew had to work around unpredictable weather. Heavy-duty matting kept the playing surfaces protected from heavy equipment throughout the job.

The Helios Energy™ Impact
Helios Energy™ delivered a turnkey LED transformation that took the YMCA’s Paul Cline Memorial Sports Complex from aging and unreliable to competition-ready. Lighting levels on the two competition turf fields increased by more than 300%, and the six grass fields gained more than 250%, giving athletes, officials, and livestream audiences crisp, daylight-quality light with no dark spots. Lighting in parking lots and along walking trails increased by more than 100%, making the complex safer for every family and visitor. The YMCA also reduced lighting energy consumption by 33% and substantially reduced annual maintenance costs. All 520 sports and security lights are now wirelessly controlled over the complex’s Wi-Fi network, enabling scheduling and remote access from anywhere. Most importantly, the team installed the entire project on time and on budget.
