Advice To His 13 Year Old Self: Try more new things.

When asked what motivates him to go to work each day, Freeman Jones needs only to look out the window:

“I’m an Eagle Scout, former wilderness guide, and general outdoor junkie. I am very worried about the effects of climate change. I can already tell that my son, who just turned 2, shares a similar passion for the natural world. I want to be able to look him in the eye and tell him that I did everything I could to help the environment.”

Freeman believes that clean, renewable energy and energy efficiency are the two most important components of preventing and correcting climate change, and enabling clean energy access is the most important component to improving the health and prosperity of developing and developed nations alike. He sees tremendous value to public and private institutions when they invest in CE/EE and appreciates his role in an industry with potential socioeconomic and environmental benefits.

When searching for a place to make his mark, Freeman found Helios to be active in all the areas of clean energy and energy efficiency he found most important. He was attracted to the company’s size, knowing he would have the ability to work in many different areas and learn all aspects of the CE and CC business. He is able to assist in the overall strategy of the company, while also working with the sales team to identify government and commercial opportunities, fostering partnerships that will allow the team to successfully capture and complete these projects.

“Helios occupies a unique space between small, local CE and EE firms that specialize in a specific product or geographical area and the much larger ESCOs that operate on a global scale.”

Over the past ten years, Freeman has successfully grown strategic sales of two technology start-ups similar to Helios in many ways. He is passionate about making positive impacts. Wanting to increase his knowledge with a formal business education, he pursued an MBA from the Kenan-Flagler School of Business at UNC Chapel Hill. But his best training came at an early age.

“Moving a great deal as a child, while extremely difficult, gave me the ability to learn and adapt quickly to new roles and settings. These abilities are tremendously advantageous at a company like Helios where we continually tackle new challenges.”
